Our history

About Us.

The Calgary Bicycle Track League (CBTL) is based at the Glenmore Velodrome, located  in Glenmore Athletic Park, 5300, 19 Street SW, Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Construction of the Glenmore Velodrome started in 1974 and was completed in time to hold the National Track Championships in 1975. The velodrome is a 400 meter outdoor permanent concrete track with 29 degree banks, owned by the City of Calgary and used by the CBTL.

The facilities are located in the neighborhood of Altadore, close to Mount Royal University, Currie Barracks, Marda Loop, Garrison Woods and North Glenmore Park next to Stu Peppard arena.

We run races every Thursday evening during the spring and summer (weather permitting). There are also many different programs we offer for all different levels. Everyone is always welcome to come check it out and then if interested join one of our Try The Track sessions!

Hours of operation.

Since our velodrome is outdoors and reliant on natural lighting, CBTL operating hours will vary throughout the year based on sunset.

At our peak, weekday operating hours will continue until 9pm provided riders who have signed up for the session are present on the track.

CBTL has several additional policies in place (listed below) that can affect our ability to remain open including rain, air quality, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic (see COVID-19 page for updates).

Full programming and hours of operation for each day can be found on our calendar.

Policies and Procedures.

Rain

Due to the nature of track cycling our velodrome cannot operate while the track is wet.

In the event of heavy rain prior to the start of a track session, the session will be canceled or delayed. This news will be posted on our Facebook page 30min prior to the start of the session.

In the event of rain during a session, the session will be delayed if the rain is coating the track. The session and subsequent sessions will be canceled if the rain persists.

Air Quality

Due to the nature and intensity of track cycling CBTL is unable to operate when the Air Quality become too poor. Air Quality can drop drastically in the summer due to forest fires. As such CBTL will use the Air Quality Health Index to determine whether or not it is safe to operate when smoke is present.

Thursday Night Races will be canceled if the AQHI is 6 or greater.

The track will be closed if AQHI is 8 or greater.

The CBTL Air Quality policy follows that of the ABA  and our partners at The City of Calgary.
The ABA Air Quality Policy can be found here

Extreme Heat

With record setting heat temperatures across Alberta the CBTL is following ABA heat guidelines and will be taking precautions to ensure all members are safe.

We will monitor local temperatures and decide exactly which precautions must be taken- including the cancelling of any race or training. The guidelines in the provided chart are based on the humidex or “feels like” temperature not the thermometer temperature.
